In line with UNFPA’s Global Strategic Plan (2018-2021), Zambia is categorized in the “red” quadrant, requiring UNFPA’s full package of operational engagement, including:

  • Advocacy and policy dialogue
  • Capacity development
  • Knowledge management
  • Targeted service delivery of essential sexual reproductive health services and
  • Partnerships and coordination.

At sub-national level, UNFPA supports the strengthening of systems for the delivery of integrated sexual and reproductive health services, as well as knowledge management practices in Luapula, North Western, Western, Central, Eastern, Lusaka and Copperbelt Provinces.

In line with UNFPA’s actions to ensure efficient and effective programme delivery in targeted Provinces, the UNFPA Representative and programme staff undertook a high-level visit to Luapula and North Western Provinces in Quater 4, 2018.

Strategic engagements with Provincial and District officials appreciated the sustained collaboration between UNFPA and the Provincial Administrations, and underscored key results towards attainment of UNFPA’s Transformative Results aimed at ending unmet need for family planning, ending preventable maternal deaths, and ending gender-based violence including child marriage.

Guided visits to supported hospitals and clinics; humanitarian settings; as well as to programmes aimed at safeguarding the health and development of young people articulated how targeted investments are delivering people-centered results by transforming the lives of women, newborns and young people.

The visits also underscored key areas that require intensified and innovative solutions to ensure universal health coverage, particularly for those furthest behind. This will enable improvements in key health and development outcomes for women and young people, including reduction in the high rates of maternal deaths, sexual and gender-based violence, adolescent pregnancies and child marriage.
