UNFPA has made a leap towards ensuring un interrupted call in support services in an effort to create a safer, more supportive environment for women and young people in Zambia. UNFPA, deeply committed to the well-being of communities, understands that access to essential services—especially those that protect and support the most vulnerable—must be uninterrupted.

Towards the end of 2023, Zambia was met with the devastating news that the country would experience a drought, later declared a national emergency. This drought, the worst Zambia has faced in over forty years, significantly impacted rural populations heavily reliant on peasant farming. As families struggled to access food, the UN and its partners sprang into action, providing much-needed relief. While food security was the primary concern, the drought's impact extended far beyond hunger, exposing women and girls to heightened risks of gender-based violence, sexual exploitation, abuse, and other harmful practices, such as child marriage and adolescent pregnancy.

Recognizing these vulnerabilities, UNFPA strengthened its collaboration with Lifeline/Childline a toll-free telephone counselling and guidance service that aims to promote child protection and prevention of gender-based violence and also provides support to survivors. It also offers referral services on various social and health and other crises that affect the communities. The partnership has been pivotal in ensuring that women and girls who are most vulnerable to GBV enhanced by the drought crisis receive the protection and services they need.

To further enhance service delivery, UNFPA has hand over solar panels, batteries, and other renewable energy equipment to ensure uninterrupted operation of critical helpline services even during power outages. It has been observed that December is a peak time for gender-based violence incidents. The handover demonstrated UNFPA’s  unwavering commitment to ensuring that every call for help is answered and the people in need can trust that their call will be met with timely support regardless. From May to December 2024, Lifeline/Childline Zambia has recorded over 514,588 calls related to gender-based violence and child marriage, primarily from drought-affected areas. These numbers highlight the critical need for consistent and accessible support systems.

UNFPA remains steadfast in its commitment to working alongside the Government, Lifeline Childline Zambia, and other stakeholders to strengthen referral systems and uplift livelihoods. Together, we aim to ensure no one is left behind in our efforts to protect and empower the most vulnerable members of our communities.

To the dedicated staff and volunteers at Lifeline Childline Zambia, we extend our deepest gratitude. Your tireless efforts in responding to calls for help—often in the face of adversity—bring renewed hope to many. Today, as we take this step forward, let it serve as a testament to our collective resolve to create a safer, more supportive Zambia for all.
