The Government of the Republic of Zambia has officially launched the Obstetric Fistula Strategic Plan 2022–2026. Developed in collaboration with UNFPA, Fistula Foundation and other partners, the Strategy is Zambia’s first standalone framework that will guide national efforts to end obstetric fistula in Zambia. It will serve as a guiding tool for healthcare providers across Zambia who work in fistula prevention, fistula treatment, and the reintegration of fistula survivors into their communities.

The Strategy was officially launched on 23 May 2023, in commemoration of the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula in Zambia.

Speaking at the official launch held in Solwezi District of North-Western Province, Permanent Secretary for North Western Province, Colonel Grandson Katambi noted that “The Obstetric Fistula Strategic Plan is a call to action to raise awareness on fistula and the importance of treating and preventing it by improving maternal health and access to obstetric care”.

In his statement delivered at the event, UNFPA Representative Mr Seth Broekman reaffirmed UNFPA’s commitment to putting the furthest behind first; to ensuring human rights, well-being and dignity for all; and to ending fistula within a generation.

“With seven years to go before the deadline for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, it is time to renew our collective commitments, enhance investments, and strengthen collaboration to end fistula by 2030” he said.
